Apple Pay and Google Pay

Summary

Customers can pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay when they book or buy a membership online. It is available with selected payment providers and is turned on by the OpenPlay team.

📱 Customers pay in a couple of taps, without typing in card details.

🔒 It is off by default. OpenPlay turns Apple Pay and Google Pay on separately.

đŸ’ŗ Card payments work exactly as before, alongside the wallet buttons.

↊ī¸ Wallet payments are refunded in the same way as card payments.

Who can use it

  • Selected payment providers only. Apple Pay and Google Pay are not available with every payment provider. Contact OpenPlay Support to check whether yours supports them.
  • Turned on by OpenPlay. The settings cannot be changed in System Configuration. Ask OpenPlay Support to turn on Apple Pay, Google Pay or both.
  • Apple Pay needs a little extra set-up. Before Apple Pay is turned on, OpenPlay registers your bookings and online joining website addresses with Apple. There is nothing for you to do.
  • Your app. If customers book through your app, the wallet buttons only show in the app when OpenPlay turns this on as well.

Which devices show each button

  • Google Pay: Chrome, when the customer's Google account has a card set up for Google Pay.
  • Apple Pay: Safari on an iPhone, iPad or Mac, when the customer has a card in Apple Wallet.

If a customer's device or browser cannot use a wallet, that button does not appear and they can pay by card as usual.

What the customer sees

The wallet buttons appear on the payment step of checkout, above the card fields. If checkout first asks the customer to accept terms, answer questions, add attendee details or use account credit, they complete that step and click Continue before the buttons appear. See How to pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay online.

Payments, confirmations and refunds

  • A wallet payment completes the booking or membership in the same way as a card payment. The customer receives the usual confirmation email.
  • The payment is recorded against the order like any other online card payment.
  • To refund a wallet payment, refund the customer from Front of House as usual. The money goes back to the card behind the customer's wallet. See How to refund a customer?.

Troubleshooting

A customer cannot see Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Check that it has been turned on for your organisation, and that the customer is using a supported browser and device. On checkouts with terms, questions or credit, the buttons only appear after the customer clicks Continue. In your app, the buttons also need to be turned on for the app.

The Apple Pay button appears, then fails straight away.
The website address the customer is using has not been registered with Apple. Contact OpenPlay Support with the address.

A customer closed the Apple Pay or Google Pay window. Have they been charged?
No. Closing the window takes no money. They can try again, or pay by card.

Can Front of House staff take Apple Pay or Google Pay?
Not through this feature. It is for online payments only.
