What happens when I connect and disconnect my tracker?

What happens to your points when you first connect a tracker, what happens if you disconnect it, and which trackers you can reconnect.

Time required: 3 minutes

User role: App user

Applies to: iPhone and Android

Module: Moves+ app > Profile > Tracker

Overview

‼️ Read this before you disconnect anything.

If you are connected to Garmin, do not disconnect it unless you mean to. It cannot be connected for the first time or reconnected once removed, though an existing connection keeps working.

Strava, Withings, Fitbit and Google Fit no longer work at all, for anyone, whether you are connected or not. There is nothing to disconnect or reconnect for these.

If you are connected to Apple Health or Health Connect, you can disconnect and reconnect freely.

When you connect

Moves+ only awards points for activities logged from the moment you first connect your tracker.

  • For example, if you connect your tracker at 4pm, activities from before that time will not count.

When you disconnect

Moves+ stops pulling any activity data. You keep the points you have already earned, and your history and leaderboard position are unaffected, but nothing new is collected until a tracker is connected again.

Always sync before disconnecting. See How do I sync my activity to Moves+? Otherwise you lose points for activity that has not reached Moves+ yet.

Can I reconnect the same tracker?

It depends which one.

Tracker Can you reconnect it?
Apple Health (iPhone) ✅ Yes, as often as you like
Health Connect (Android) ✅ Yes, as often as you like
Garmin ❌ No. Once disconnected it cannot be reconnected, though an existing connection keeps working
Strava ❌ No. This tracker no longer works at all
Withings ❌ No. This tracker no longer works at all
Fitbit ❌ No. This tracker no longer works at all
Google Fit ❌ No. This tracker no longer works at all

New connections to Garmin are no longer available, though an existing connection keeps working. Strava, Withings, Fitbit and Google Fit no longer work at all, for anyone.

If you were relying on Strava, Withings, Fitbit or Google Fit, connect Apple Health on iPhone or Health Connect on Android now to keep earning points.

Troubleshooting

I have already disconnected one of the deprecated trackers. What now?
Connect Apple Health if you are on iPhone, or Health Connect if you are on Android. Most wearables and fitness apps can feed into one of those two, including Samsung Health, Garmin Connect and the Fitbit app, so you can usually keep using the device you already own.

Will I lose my points and badges if I switch tracker?
No. Your existing points, badges and history stay with your account throughout. Only the source of new activity changes.

Why did my activity from this morning not count?
Points only start from the moment you connect. Activity logged before that is not backdated.

Should I disconnect and reconnect to fix a syncing problem?
No. Reconnecting is not a fix. On Garmin it removes your connection permanently, and on Strava, Withings, Fitbit or Google Fit there is no connection left to protect. Work through Check List: Why am I missing Moves+ points? instead.
