Suggestions for planning a challenge that members join and finish, based on how challenges work in Moves+.

How challenges shape your plan
A few rules decide what works:
- Each challenge is for one activity type: steps, running, cycling or swimming.
- A member can be in one challenge per activity type at a time.
- Activity counts from the day a member joins, not from the start date.
- Progress updates when the member opens the app.
- Once members have joined, you can only change the name, description and How to win, so check the dates and goal before you publish.
Choose the goal and length
We suggest a clear goal that most members who join can reach in the time. Members who miss the goal get no prize, although they keep the points they earned along the way.
Avoid running two challenges of the same activity type at once, because members can only join one. Different types work well side by side, for example a steps challenge and a cycling challenge.
Set the publish date a few days before the start date. Members can see the challenge from the publish date and join from the start date, so they can join on day one and get the full time. Use How to win to explain the rules in one sentence.
Pair it with rewards
The prize is points. It is added on top of activity points, does not count towards the daily cap, and counts towards the monthly leaderboard. We suggest setting the prize with your reward costs in mind, and making sure rewards are live when the challenge ends, so members have something to spend it on. See How to create a reward.
For a sponsored or named campaign, set the challenge's Points type to a partner category. The prize is then paid in that campaign's points. See How to set up Partner Points.
Use notifications at the right moments
In App Notifications, you can send to Challenge Members or Challenge Non-Members of one challenge. Moments that work well:
- At the start: invite non-members to join.
- Halfway: encourage members who have joined.
- Near the end: remind members to open the app, so their latest activity syncs.
You can schedule these in advance, between 07:00 and 19:00 in your organisation's timezone and up to 30 days ahead. See How to send app notifications.
Group challenges for teams and clubs
For a team, club, department or site, create a public group and run a challenge inside it. Only members of the group can join, and each member works towards the goal on their own. A group challenge must start tomorrow or later, so we suggest creating the group first and giving people time to join it. You can also add up to 5 posts a day to the group. See How to create a public group.
Group challenges always pay Moves+ points.
Check progress
Create a report on the Moves Challenges data source. It shows who joined, completed or left each challenge, and their progress. See How to create a report.
Progress only reflects activity that has synced, so members who have not opened the app recently may look behind.
After the challenge
The challenge ends at the end of its end date and its status changes to Past. You cannot edit or delete it after that. Members who finished get their prize automatically and see the challenge under My completed challenges on their profile.
We suggest checking your Moves Challenges report to see how many joined and finished, thanking members with a notification, and using the results to set the next goal.
