How to pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay online

Summary

This guide shows how customers pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay when they book online or buy a membership through online joining.

Apple Pay and Google Pay are available with selected payment providers and must be turned on by the OpenPlay team. See Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Go to checkout

  • The customer adds their booking or membership to the basket and goes to checkout.

2. Complete their details, if asked

  • If checkout asks for anything before payment, the customer completes it first. This can include accepting the Terms and Conditions, answering questions, adding attendee details or using account credit.
  • They then click Continue to go to payment.
  • If there is nothing to complete, checkout goes straight to payment.

3. Choose Apple Pay or Google Pay

  • The wallet button appears above the card fields: Pay with Google Pay in Chrome, or the Apple Pay button in Safari on an Apple device.
  • The billing address is only needed to pay by card.
  • To change their details or credit, the customer can click Back, make the change and click Continue again.

4. Confirm the payment

  • The Apple Pay or Google Pay window opens and shows the amount to pay.
  • The customer confirms the payment in that window, for example with Face ID, Touch ID, their passcode or their Google account.

5. Wait for confirmation

  • The page shows Your payment is authorised. Please wait on this page.
  • Once the booking or membership is confirmed, the customer sees the usual confirmation and receives the confirmation email.

Troubleshooting

The customer cannot see Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Google Pay shows in Chrome when the customer's Google account has a card set up. Apple Pay shows in Safari on an iPhone, iPad or Mac with a card in Apple Wallet. If checkout has a details step, the buttons only appear after Continue. The customer can always pay by card instead.

The customer sees "Before you can pay".
Something on the details step is missing, such as accepting the terms, answering a required question or completing attendee details. The message says what to fix. No money has been taken.

The customer closed the Apple Pay or Google Pay window.
No money is taken. They can open it again, or pay by card.

The payment was declined.
An error is shown and no booking or membership is created. The customer can try again or pay by card.

The customer sees "The amount to pay has changed. Please review your basket and try again."
The basket total changed during checkout, for example because credit was added or removed. The customer checks the basket and pays the new total.
